About New Unity

New Unity, based at Newington Green Meeting House, is a non-religious church with a radically inclusive congregation that ‘believes in good’. It creates space for personal growth; it runs a wide range of life-affirming events and activities; and it works towards social justice. Unlike traditional religion, its congregation holds no set beliefs or creed. Its Minister openly identifies as an atheist, and the vast majority of its members reject traditional religion. Instead of religious texts, the congregation gains insight from a rich variety of humanity’s writings and art, and from connecting with each other.

Newington Green Meeting House in 2019

Thanks to National Lottery players, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded New Unity £1.73million to renovate its home at Newington Green Meeting House. ‘This will make us a fantastic new venue for local schoolchildren and community groups, plus interested parties from further afield’, explains John Bates, chair of the team that submitted the National Lottery bid. ‘We’ll be adding a visitor centre, creating disabled access, and generally future-proofing the building so it can serve generations to come’.

Rev Andy Pakula, Minister of New Unity, adds: ‘We’ve always been a radically inclusive community, but thanks to the National Lottery award, we can now take this to the next level: inviting lots of different groups to come and explore this building’s connection with the 18th-century Dissenters: social reformers who were not afraid to stand up to prejudice, and who influenced many people in their day.’

The renovation will take place throughout 2019, with the grand reopening scheduled for Jan 2020.
